And that’s a wrap for The Verge– many thanks to Chelsea Demitras for the collaboration, and to Miles Peiser and Monica Gallagher for the editing and guidance!
Transparency is important to Vengeful Ghost. Comics is hard business. It gets easier if we share information and our hard-fought lessons learned. In posts like this, Parker will lay out the Ghost’s quarterly numbers and try to provide some context.
Okay, first things first: despite the success of our recent Kickstarter campaign (135%! Thank you, everyone!), those numbers will not be included in this analysis–they fell out of the reporting period by a couple days and Kickstarter holds onto the money for two weeks anyway. We’ll do analysis of the Kickstarter when all our revenue and expenses are accounted for. It’ll probably be early May.
First quarter 2017 was interesting, though! Let’s get to the numbers.

Analysis
- Took a while to get these numbers out–between the Kickstarter and a bevy of personal and family challenges, 2Q17 has been a rough one.
- I’ve now got a full year of conventions under my belt, and it’s time to do some serious analysis as I plan for the 2018 convention season. One thing to remember is that the above ratios don’t include travel expenses like fuel, lodging, and food.
- One impact of the extensive convention travel I did in 2Q17 is that a lot less of my money went to Ghostfriends, instead going to hotels and convention organizers.
- Obviously numbers for 2Q17 are skewed a bit by the Kickstarter. I still owe y’all a a full analysis of the Kickstarter, but overall I think the goals worked out well. I covered expenses and ended up with a beautiful book that is entirely paid for.
- To be honest, I’m feeling a bit discouraged heading into 3Q17. We’ll see how I feel in two and a half months–I’m hoping to have The Second Year (“The Summit” and Projects Shanghai, Manila, Karachi, and Seoul) completely drafted and mostly illustrated by the next “State of the Ghost.”
- That’ll mean high cost next quarter due to capital outlay to Ghostfriends, combined with low income due to the publishing hiatus. The numbers are probably going to look worse before they look better–good to remember.
Thanks for reading. Please comment with any questions. If you want to help make those numbers a little prettier, consider clicking over to our Patreon campaign, buying something from our online store, or throwing something in the tip jar.
Vengeful Ghost is taking a brief hiatus to rebuild a buffer, finish fulfilling the Kickstarter, and poke around with other projects.
We’ll be around intermittently (we’ve still got a State of the Ghost to put up, and another quarter about to wrap up), and you can expect Vengeful Ghost: The Second Year to continue in August!
Hey, y’all! Just a real quick update– the Vengeful Ghost: The First Year Kickstarter is live! You can find it here. As I write this, it is Day 4 and we are 1/3 of the way there. I hope that means we’ll get to unlock some stretch goals!
We’ve been teasing it off and on for a while, but the time has come to reveal our next big project…
We’re collecting the entire first year of Vengeful Ghost stories into a single, beautiful paperback. And we need you on our team.
This Saturday, 4 March, we’ll be launching a Kickstarter to fund the printing and design of this volume. We know it’s going to be great, and we know we can count on you to help make it real. As soon as we hit that “launch” button on Saturday, we’ll post the link here. Please share it with your friends and family. Hell, share it with your enemies–spam the hell out of them with it until they have no choice but to relent and help bring this beautiful thing into the world.
(Not really)
And if you’re in the Baltimore area, check it out: Parker is going to be manning a table at the Amazing Spiral in Belvedere Square. They’re going to be giving away back issues for free, running great sales across the store, and streaming the online-0nly Coast to Coast Comic Con with appearances from Jim Lee, Michael Avon Oeming, Matt Kindt, and a whole bunch more. Parker will be hyping the Kickstarter, selling ashcans, and giving away Vengeful Ghost sampler books. We hope you’ll swing by and check it out.
Thanks so much for your love and support. Watch this station for more details!
Hey there! We just got pages 1 through 7 of What the Mine Gives fixed so that the files are significantly smaller and the page looks more like what it will when we get things packaged for print. Thanks for your patience!
